We have some larger trees on our property. They’re black walnuts. I’ve learned a lot about Juglone, syrup, and squirrels since learning about black walnut trees.

Today our local arborist came by because we had a large limb crack in some recent high winds. It was too high in the tree for us to manage, at least 15 to 20 meters (50-65 feet) in the air. And it sits on a part of our property where the grown slopes dramatically.

The arborist got up in the tree, which was amazing in and of itself. He saw a squirrels nest just above. Apparently they have a lot of drey nests, extras just in case. He did his normal checks and felt it was empty. He needed to move it to get to the limb.

On the ground his collegues realized there were babies. Four in fact. Sadly it was clear two did no make it. However the other two were breathing and seemed fine.

Our local animal services had no ability to help, but they suggested I put the nest at the bottom of the tree and play distressed baby squirrel noises. So I did.

Wouldn’t you know it, with in an hour mama squirrel had come to fetch her babies. It was amazing to see her put the babies in her MOUTH! They were about 1/4 of her own size. She ran the across our street and up a local cedar. You can see her below checking the nest out. Still unsure.

Anyway, that’s all. But also, nature is so amazing!
